These are my own personal triggers — not a general list. What triggers one person may not affect another. I keep this list as a reminder of what I need to watch for and guard against.
Internal Triggers
Emotional and mental states that cause cravings:
- Boredom
- Stress
- Resentments
- Fears
Environmental Triggers & Rules
Situations and substances to avoid:
- Never allow alcohol in the house
- If alcohol is received as a present, do not accept it — give it back
- No mouthwash (contains alcohol)
- No food made with alcohol such as tiramisu, beer cheese soup, steak sauces, and so on
- Avoid addictive medicines
- Check for alcohol content before taking any OTC or prescription medications
- Do not attend events where alcohol is served, even family events
- Leave as soon as people bring out alcohol
- TV, movies, commercials, and video games can all be triggers
